Do you have your ChatGPT export ready?
MigrateMyChats works with your full ChatGPT data export — a ZIP file from OpenAI containing your conversation history. You'll need it before you can start.
Here's exactly how to request your ChatGPT export:
1
Log into ChatGPT and click your profile icon in the top-right corner.
2
Go to Settings → Data Controls → Export Data and click Export.
3
OpenAI will email you a download link. Click it and save the ZIP file to your computer.
4
Once the ZIP arrives, come back here and click "Yes, I have my export" above.
⏱
Plan ahead: OpenAI typically takes 24–48 hours to deliver the export link. You cannot begin the migration without it.

Import to ClaudeStep 1 — Capture your Personal Context
This step captures everything ChatGPT knows about you — your custom instructions, personality settings, characteristics, and memories — so nothing gets left behind. All sections are optional.
📍 Custom Instructions
In ChatGPT: click your profile icon → Settings → Personalization → Custom InstructionsCopy the text from the Custom Instructions field and paste it below.
In Claude: paste this into Settings → General → Personal preferences
📍 Base Style, Tone & Characteristics
In ChatGPT: Settings → Personalization — select your current Base style and tone and Characteristics settings below. The tool will translate these into plain-text instructions you can paste into Claude's Personal Preferences.

📍 More About You
In ChatGPT: Settings → Personalization → More About YouThis includes fields like your nickname, occupation, and any other personal context you've provided. Copy and paste it below.
In Claude: this will be included in your Settings → General → Personal preferences alongside your Custom Instructions.
📍 Memories
In ChatGPT: click your profile icon → Settings → Personalization → Manage MemoriesYou will see everything ChatGPT has saved about you. Copy the full list and paste it below.
In Claude: go to claude.ai → Settings → Memory — use this as a reference to seed Claude's memory with the same context about you.
All sections optional — skip if you haven't configured these settings.
Step 2 — Enter your ChatGPT Project names
Open ChatGPT and look at your left sidebar. Type your Project names below — one at a time or as a comma-separated list — then press Enter or click Add. Click "More" in ChatGPT if additional projects are hidden below the fold. A "Misc" bucket is always added automatically for unmatched chats.
Your projects will appear here...
Why enter these manually?
ChatGPT's export file does not include project names or assignments — it's a known limitation of their format. Entering your project names here lets the tool sort your chats into the right folders automatically.
Where to find Project Instructions in ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT → click on a Project in your left sidebar → click the "..." menu in the upper right corner → select ⚙ Project Instructions from the flyout → copy the full instructions text and paste it into the field for that project below.
Step 3 — Capture your Project Instructions
ChatGPT's export file does not include the custom instructions you wrote for each Project — these live only in ChatGPT's settings. For each project below, go to ChatGPT → select your Project → "..." (upper right corner) → ⚙ Project Instructions → copy the instructions text and paste it in. These will be written as a header block in each project's output files so you can paste them directly into Claude Projects.
NOTE: If you do not use Project Instructions, you may leave these fields blank, fill in only the ones you need, or choose "Skip this step" above.

No projects entered — go back to Step 2 to add projects, or skip this step.
